* * * *

Athan sat very still in front of the video monitor as he watched his mate tool off on the back of a motorcycle. She looked fragile and in peril as they sped away with smoke in their wake. Enemies could be coming from any direction, and she was speeding away from certain safety. Oh, he’d definitely made a mistake in wanting her to enjoy freedom and her own destiny for a short time. Now, he had to find her. “Are you getting this?”

“Yeah, I’m getting it.” Jasper was in Montana but showed in a box in the upper right corner of the screen, his irritation coming off him in visible waves. Athan would take a moment to appreciate that fact later—it was impressive. For now, it was clear his fury matched Athan’s.

Athan shook his head. “This entire situation was well planned out.”

“I’m aware,” Jasper muttered. His hair was jet-black and his eyes an odd comingling of blue and green that was too electric to pass for human hazel eyes. Like some immortals, he normally wore colored contacts or dark glasses when in public. “Apparently, Leah has gotten even better at subterfuge than she was eighty years ago.”

That happened when one mated a spy. But fate had her own plans, and Jasper’s relationship was his to handle. However, there was nothing wrong with a little brotherly advice, especially since Athan’s fucking mate was now in peril. He sucked in air, trying to ignore the fury pounding through his veins. “I think it’s time you took your mate in hand.”

“I plan to,” Jasper muttered. “As soon as I find her.”

Athan shook his head. “She’s become quite good at evading you through the years. Hasn’t she?” Although he couldn’t really criticize right now, considering Ivy was out of his reach and sight.

“Yeah, she has, and I’ve allowed it to go on long enough.”

Athan wondered where he should have drawn the line with Ivy. “I figured we had a little more time before Ulric returned home, and I really believed Dayne would live for centuries to come. I guess that was a mistake.”

Jasper sighed heavily. “Agreed. I wanted to give Leah some freedom, too, but it’s too late for that now. Our method of sending blood to each other is now in the past. I’ve given her enough time to get over her mad and make the right decision, but apparently, she’s too damn stubborn. Do you have any idea where they’ve gone?”

“No. We’re checking all the CCTV footage for the areas along the fence line and through town. But like I said, Leah seemed to have had this pretty well planned out.”

Jasper’s growl was low and barely discernible. “Okay, let’s go at this from another angle. Do you know where Ivy’s new life was going to be?”

“No,” Athan said, scratching his head. He’d figured to discuss the matter with her after the funeral, but everything had quickly gone south. He’d never had a problem finding her before, although she seemed to be working with Leah now.
